Under the Sea

East Meets Beach For This Chic, Ocean-Inspired Destination Wedding

For the ultimate beachside La Jolla affair, event planner and designer, Vanessa Van Wieren of Alchemy Fine Events & Invitations, took ocean-inspired California wedding design to a new, sophisticated level for this destination wedding for Manhattan-based couple, Bevin and Danny. Blending beach chic with zen, Asian elements, the Scripps Seaside Forum was transformed into a chic and modern space for an unforgettable evening. To create a natural and organic, beachy ceremony overlooking La Jolla's scenic La Jolla Shores, a chuppah made of driftwood was adorned with whimsical and modern origami. Bevin, who wore an elegant lace Monique Lhuillier gown, walked down a beach sand-inspired, grey-washed wood aisle. Eye-catching outdoor lounge areas emulated California modern style and featured a mirrored bar and a Japanese ice sculpture food display for cocktail hour. Geometric lanterns hanged above and oversized lanterns lined the glass railing. The reception space was completely transformed into a magical under-the-sea scene with soft gray carpet and dance floor, trimmed with white, grey and sequin drapery. Stunning origami cranes floated from the ceiling and led guests to a show-stopping escort card display (names were written on smaller cranes) made of beachwood and lucite, filled with flowers and succulents. Custom-wrapped square guest tables were all about the ultra-modern square design, topped with ocean and coral reef inspired floral centerpieces in lucite trays arranged by Isari Flower Studio + Event Design. Table numbers were written onto pearlescent shells, name cards set upon gold half-shells and purple coral printed napkins tied it all together. Later in the evening, guests were further awed by the reveal of a dessert room, featuring a 16-foot display of five cakes and themed sweets, an ice cream cart on the patio, and tray-passed cookies and milk. It was an incredibly designed affair to celebrate the newlywed couple, captured beautifully by Samuel Lippke Studios.
